Looking ahead : Bankhead House B&B in 2017

Posted on January 20, 2017

We’re well into January 2017, with lovely bright and sunny days, and only the occasional gloomy day ( and not very much rain………..shhh, it might hear me!!). The B&B has been closed for a couple of months while we’ve been busy with other projects. Christmas and New Year was a busy time with family and friends arriving to spend time with us, and now it’s quieter, thoughts turn to the new B&B season. This week I decided to re-open the B&B on 2nd April, and welcome guests until the end of October, though we’ll be closed for a couple of…

The pleasure of a simple walk to the beach

Posted on April 18, 2016

The sunshine this weekend seemed to encourage a whole lot of people to go out and enjoy the great outdoors, including us. We knew we wanted to go for  walk along the beach, but which one to choose, they’re all lovely. The decision was made just to go to the nearest one, so we headed down to Silverburn Park and made our way towards the beach on the footpath between the two links courses of Leven and Lundin Links. There were more golfers than we’d seen for ages out on both courses, most with woolly hats to keep comfortable with…

Picturesque Fife

Posted on March 6, 2016

Another lovely sunny day with very little wind, so we hopped in the car with Snoepie our Jack Russell terrier, and drove eastwards along the coast towards some of Fife’s picturesque places. First stop was the  small fishing village of St Monans,  with the final destination being the Cocoa Tree Cafe in Pittenweem, the next village along, where we sometimes head to on a Sunday morning to enjoy a cup of good coffee and a delicious roll or cake to accompany it, with a read of the Sunday papers thrown in. From the seafront, man and dog head eastwards along…

We are renovating our rooms for 2016!

Posted on December 5, 2015

Every winter we spend several weeks doing maintenance and refurbishment in the house so that the season begins with a fresh and tidy appearance for our guests. We do all the work ourselves, as with most things we do. It was the intention last winter to refurbish the twin bedroom, but the necessity for a larger and more energy efficient boiler took precedence. So in addition to a great deal of decorating and renovating to be done throughout the house in the next few weeks, the twin bedroom is going to get its refurb at last. There’ll be a new…

VisitScotland award says we serve a really good breakfast !

Posted on November 16, 2015

A few days ago we had our incognito assessment visit by VisitScotland and in addition to retaining our 4* rating , we have achieved a Taste our Best award which reflects our commitment to sourcing Scottish produce for our guests to enjoy.   The importance of offering good quality food which comes predominately from the local area, has been a feature of our bed and breakfast experience for several years now, and feedback from our guests shows that it is appreciated. Since we opened our home to B&B guests five years ago, we have served home made jams, jellies and…

How to get there

Posted on September 27, 2015

A couple of days ago, it was a beautiful sunny day, with one of those perfect blue skies which I so enjoy after days of cloud. It was an excellent reason to get outside and to do those little garden jobs that had been waiting for just the right day to do them. Kate was here as well. Kate is a beautiful soul who has been coming one morning a week for several years to help us keep the garden weed free and to do those garden jobs that we find it hard to get round to when we’re busy…

Pittenweem in August

Posted on September 15, 2015

Just 20 minutes drive along the coast to the east lies Pittenweem, a cosy, picturesque fishing village in the East Neuk( east corner) of Fife which has also become a desirable community for many artists who have settled there over the years. August sees the Pittenweem Arts Festival taking place, and it’s become a firm favourite of mine and thousands of other people who flock to enjoy the week long event. I usually try to go on a weekday as it tends to be less busy, but this year it had to be a Saturday afternoon, that’s all I could manage…

Just Be at Bankhead House B&B

Posted on August 25, 2015

Meet Nina and Andreas, our guests from Germany who spent the last night of their holiday in Scotland with us as we are within easy reach of Edinburgh Airport. The original plan after breakfast was to go into Edinburgh for some sightseeing before heading to the airport for their flight home. However, Bankhead had started to work its magic, so after their breakfast experience and having said their farewells to us , they decided to take a look in the garden. ”Take as long as you like” we say. We were busy with room changeovers, when we decided to…

Welcome to the new arrivals

Posted on July 25, 2015

The first nest of house martins have fledged. It’s such a privilege to be able to watch these events at close hand. This year there have only been a few nests up at the bedroom windows; there are several more than usual in the downstairs windows. We enjoy watching the birds building their nests during the late Spring, then there’s the quiet brooding period, and once the chicks are hatched, the long summer days are filled with adult birds continuously feeding their young. The downside of this latter period is the mess on the windows, which gets progressively worse causing…

The wet and windy Open Championship

Posted on July 23, 2015

The week of the Open Golf Championship in St Andrews proved  interesting on many fronts. During the practice days at the beginning of the week, our guests enjoyed their days there, just taking in the sights and the atmosphere, and spotting the professional golfers. For one of our guests, it was a long held dream come true, simply to be there and to walk on the Old Course at St Andrews. The excitement of the long awaited tournament at St Andrews was palpable as Thursday arrived and the championship began at last. All avid golfers, some guests decided to play…

Visit Scotland

Posted on May 6, 2012

The Scottish Tourist board is known as Visit Scotland, and we joined last June. One of their requirements is to have a visit by an incognito assessor for quality assurance purposes. They provide a book of guidelines showing you how their rating standards are achieved, so it’s actually quite easy to know what you’re aiming for. I aspired to four stars -the rating of Excellent. My criteria was very simple. Would I be happy to stay here and enjoy my visit, and even more important, would I want to return? My stays in some B&B’s in California recently, heightened my…

A Stay in Fife

Posted on April 22, 2012

We went along to the bi-annual meeting for members of A Stay in Fife last week. We joined the network of family owned Bed and Breakfasts in Fife last year. Membership is limited and members are selected to offer a high standard of service and the attention to detail expected in a quality B&B. It’s helpful to hear about experiences and opinions from other accommodation providers, and we value the support of the members. There’s the opportunity to look around the B&B before the meeting starts, and you pick up ideas too. I’ve implemented one this week following the visit…

On being creative

Posted on April 12, 2012

During the first weekend in May, there’s a special happening in Fife, one which is close to my heart. Tantalising little posts on Facebook started appearing a couple of months ago, and some brochures are sitting on my kitchen dresser. I already have a good idea of my route during the weekend, according to what I’d like to see, and perhaps buy. Open Studios North Fife takes place on the 5th, 6th and 7th May. Three days when 84 artists, creators and designers throw open their workspaces to the public. The photos that have appeared on Facebook, promoting individual artists’ work,…
